Cultural Study Group
Members Photos
These are informal meetings held at members' homes to learn
orchid cultural and answer questions about orchid care.  It is
intended, especially, for new members and new growers but the
long established members are welcome.  This mixed experience
level gives the novice many opinions, advice that may work in their
growing area.  It, also, allows new members to meet and get to
know the more experienced members of the society.

The Culture Study Group met at Phipps on Saturday February the 28th. The meeting was
wellattended and the participants enjoyed a green sunny day. We started the visit with a very
interesting tour of Phipps led by Georgena Albrecht, a Phipps docent, as well as a member of
OSWP, and a charming person as well…. Georgena ably discussed different plant collections,
and led us through the institution. She also mentioned some of the new conservation measure
implemented, particularly in the new pavilion of the Phipps.  Demetria Marsh gave us an
overview of the relationship between the OSWP and the Phipps orchid collection in the past:
Most of us were not aware of the depth of the volunteering efforts of many members of our
organization during the years. She particularly mentioned our member John Lucas, who in the
previous hothouses did what work was necessary, from repotting to debugging to installing or
repairing electrical connections as needed. Many others contributed too.  Then, thanks to the
courtesy of Georgia Wahl, who is in charge of the orchids, we had the unusual and exciting
opportunity to visit the new and rarely seen growing greenhouses to view the plants there, a
green and healthy looking collection. She treated us to a tour of the warmer and cooler areas,
answered our many questions, and showed us the fascinating new Paphiopedilums donated to
the Phipps by Dr. Thaschawee Arkachaisri: very robust and unusual plants. It was a treat to be
able to see how Georgia grows orchids, and some of us drew conclusions about how to
improve our own plant culture. After a quick lunch we left wiser, with aromatic cuttings of
rosemary left for our enjoyment by a very thoughtful person.
Thank you Georgena!!!
Thank you Demetria!!!
Thank you Georgia!!!
