Cultural Study Group
Members Photos
These are informal meetings held at members' homes to learn
orchid cultural and answer questions about orchid care.  It is
intended, especially, for new members and new growers but the
long established members are welcome.  This mixed experience
level gives the novice many opinions, advice that may work in their
growing area.  It, also, allows new members to meet and get to
know the more experienced members of the society.

TO CSG OR NOT TO CSG . . . THAT IS THE QUESTION

What was it?  In the early 1980’s the Cultural Study Group (CSG) was
started as part of the OSWP and became a dynamic part of our society.  It
has continued in some form since.

What is it?  The CSG is an almost monthly meeting (maybe 9 out of 12
months) more casual than our Sunday meetings.  It is normally on a
Thursday evening:  gather at 7PM, meeting 7:30 - 9PM, treats until 9:30ish
at member’s homes.  The speaker is one of our members who talks on
some aspect of local orchid culture.

Why is it?  The idea originated in an upstate NY society.  We copied it as
a chance for members to 1) see how other members grow in their homes;
2) meet members informallly (ya know . . . bond);  3) learn to grow orchids
better; 4) bring your bloomin’ playnts to brag; and 5) eat cookies, drink
coffee and chat ‘n ‘at.

What now?  In the last several years interest has waned.  It is possible
that, with all our other interest, responsibilities, etc., there is no time left
for another meeting.  Perhaps the CSG has run its course.

To be or not to be

What’s next?  For the next year or so, we will continue the Cultural Study
Group and see if it is still a viable idea.

So, if you are interested, please contact Demetria Marsh:
with topics on cultural matters for local speakers to discuss
to volunteer your apartment/house for a meeting
to let me know your opinion and ideas about the CSG
to volunteer to be a speaker

Basics:  the host home needs to be a reasonable distance from the center
of the city (30 minutes driving max) with some parking available.  We can
squish into a space, sitting on chairs or on the floor (remember I
mentioned casual).  Cookies and coffee/sodas provided by the host/ess . .
. nothing more.

We will start in August with, of course, a Sunday (not Thursday) meeting
and flea market, a tradition started by the Latours many years ago.  Then
we will go to Thursday evenings for the Fall.  More details will be on the
website and in the August newsletter.

Look forward to hearing from you and learning the answer to this classic
question . . . Demetria Marsh, CSG Chair
