Coming in May, Courtney Hackney talking about Cattleyas of North
America.
Dr. Stewart will tell us about orchid conservation of native and cultivated species.

Scott Stewart’s passion for orchid conservation stems from a long-time interest in the outdoors and all
things plant related.  His formal training in orchid conservation started as an undergraduate student
conducting propagation and reintroduction research on the Federally endangered eastern prairie
fringed orchid (Platanthera leucophaea) of the Midwest and the state endangered short-lipped ladies’-
tresses (Spiranthes brevilabris) of Florida.  Based on his experiences working with these rare orchid
species, Scott began collaborating with other orchid conservation specialists throughout the world.
These global partnerships resulted in the formulation of the integrated conservation approach to the
study of orchid ecology.  Scott demonstrated the usefulness of this holistic, integrated approach to
orchid conservation through his dissertation research and continues to promote the application of this
approach throughout the world.  To date, several Federal and state conservation agencies have
adopted integrated orchid conservation as their primary management tool for orchids and orchid
habitats.

Scott currently serves as Director of Horticulture and Agriculture Programs at Kankakee Community
College.  He earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Horticulture from the University of Florida in 2007 and a
B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Illinois College in 2002.  Previously, Scott worked at
PhytoTechnology Laboratories in Kansas as a Research & Development Scientist, as well as
government service with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Florida and the Florida Department of
Environmental Protection.  He has worked with numerous orchid and native plant groups to establish
grass-roots conservation programs in places such as the Cayman Islands, Florida, Costa Rica, and
Cuba.  He is a member of numerous professional and enthusiast horticultural and agricultural
societies, and serves as a peer reviewer for several horticultural and plant science journals and
magazines.  Scott serves as Associate Editor of the North American Native Orchid Journal.  He has
published over 50 scientific and popular articles and book chapters on the topics of orchid
propagation from seed, orchid tissue culture, and orchid conservation.

Members may sell plants at this meeting as Scott does not sell orchids.
